When my parents set sail with their family from Humpolec to the U.S.A. on April 29, 1867, I was seven years old. We sailed on the ocean nine weeks and three days, being driven by a storm into icebergs to the far north. Finally, we landed at the New York Harbor on the 4th of July and to our astonishment, the American people were celebrating something we had never heard. Upon inquiring, my parents were told that it was the celebration of Declaration of Independence.
We stayed in New york for two days on Ellis Island, where all the passes were examined and each of us were examined physically. By our passes we were directed on the train 6th day of July to Wisconsin and settled on a farm in Grant County where I lived with my parents until 1882, when an opportunity came to homestead in Brule County, South Dakota.
My two brothers and four sisters have preceded me in death.
