    • VALPARAISO Helen J. Hakel, 85, of Valparaiso, died July 6 at South Haven Living Center in Wahoo.
      Hakel was born on Dec. 20, 1923, to Charles and Anna (Kavan) Kubik on a farm near Prague. She received her education at rural School District 84 and at Prague High School. As a young lady, she was part of a musical group called Alf's Merrymakers and played the piano accordion for many local events.
      On May 12, 1941, she married Max A. Hakel of Valparaiso at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Prague. They operated a dairy farm near Valparaiso for many years. She had been a resident of South Haven Living Center in recent years.
      Their marriage was blessed with four children, Trina, Jerome, Ronald and Charles. After 33 years of marriage, Max lost his life in an automobile accident on March 17, 1975.
      She was a parishioner at Sts. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church since 1941. She was active in the Altar Society as well as the Valparaiso Women's Club serving each organization as president for two years.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Max, her parents, brothers, Raymond and William Kubik, and sister, Irene Wesely.
      She is survived by her children and spouses, Trina and Tony Kroenke of Omaha, Jerome and Jean Hakel of Lincoln, Ronald Hakel and Charles Hakel, both Valparaiso; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
      Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 11 at Sts. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church in Valparaiso with Msgr. Daniel Seiker officiating.
      Casket Bearers are Richard Kubik, Robert Kubik, Kenneth Hakel, Dan Wesely, Shane Merritt and Troy Behrens
      Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
      Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 10 with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. all at the church.
      Memorials may be made in care of the family.
      Svoboda Funeral Home of Wahoo is in charge of the arrangements.
