Services were to be held Wednesday, Apr. 4 at First Baptist Church in Chancellor for Donald Hoogestraat who, having battled cancer for a short time, died Saturday morning, Mar. 31, 2007 at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls. He attained the age of 82 years, five months and 18 days.
Casketbearers were Richard Poppinga, Roger Harms, Alan Poppinga, Art Harms, Lynn Heeren, and Arlon Knock.
Interment was in the Chancellor Baptist Cemetery with Military Rites by Bertus-Jurgens American Legion Post #283.
Donald Duane Hoogestraat was born Oct. 13, 1924 on a farm near Chancellor, SD the son of Bert and Ida (DeNeui) Hoogestraat.
He grew up in the area attending rural school and graduating from Chancellor High School in 1942. While in the sixth grade, Don accepted Christ as his personal Savior. He attended Iowa State University for one year until entering the US Army in 1945. As an auto mechanic, he attained the rank of Sergeant and was stationed in Virginia and New Jersey. Following his honorable discharge, he attended South Dakota State University for mechanical engineering and played freshman football. He then assumed ownership and operation of the family farm near Chancellor.
On Feb. 19, 1949 he was united in marriage to Darlene Lomica of Kimball, SD.
Four children were born to this union, infant twin daughters in 1949, Craig in 1951 and Fran in 1957. Darlene died on Apr. 29, 1998.
Don operated a repair shop and produced custom parts at Hoogestraat Manufacturing Co. He also did custom baling and corn shelling in the area. In 1958 he was awarded a US Patent for an electric fence wire reel he invented.
Don was an active and faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Chancellor where he served as Deacon, Trustee, Sunday school teacher and on various committees. He was a 60 year member of Bertus-Jurgens American Legion Post #283. He was a past president of the SD Pork Producers and had been a Master Pork Producer. For 37 years he served on the Board of Directors for Lennox Farm Gas. In the past he was appointed to the US Health Association for the eradication of pseudorabies and served on the National Livestock Sanitation Board. Don was very active in legislative efforts to protect the family farm.
Besides his parents and wife, Don was preceded in death by infant twin daughters in 1949; three brothers: Norman in 1923, Marvin in 1974 and Lavern in 2000.
Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Craig (Peggy) Hoogestraat, Chancellor and daughter, Dr. Fran Hoogestraat, Nashville, TN; his special friend, Shirley Kuper of Lennox; five grandchildren: Tricia Hoogestraat, Brock Hoogestraat, Drew Hoogestraat, Matthew Anderson and Rebecca (Billy) Weegar and one great-granddaughter, Bailey Weegar; sister-in-law, Hilda Hoogestraat-Heerts, Parkersburg, IA as well as other relatives and friends.

Lennox - Donald Hoogestraat, 82, died Saturday morning, March 31, 2007 at Sanford Medical Center.
Services will begin 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 4 at First Baptist Church in Chancellor. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at Dindot-Klusmann Funeral Home, with family present from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. to greet friends.
