24 Jul 1915, 844 died in the sinking of the Eastland excursion boat in the Chicago River. The ship rolled over while tied to the dock. It was chartered to take employees from Western Electric Company of Cicero, Illinois to a picnic in Michigan City, Indiana. Many of the passengers were Czech immigrants from Cicero; 220 of them perished.
