    *** 25, 26 June 1862, 2 ships, carrying 51 Bohemian individuals; the families were VOPALENSKY, Zemlicka, Riba (Fish), Burian, Rychesky, Vasicek, Svejda, and Homolka immigrated to New York and went mainly to Grant County, Wisconsin, USA. Immigrant Frank Vopalensky is the first cousin of immigrant Jan Vopalensky who immigrated in 1891 to Milwaukee.

    In 1860 Karel Jonas fled to London, after publishing a pamphlet which caused his expulsion from the university and persecution by the Austrian authorities. In 1863 he immigrated to the US, and lived in Racine, Wisconsin. Published the Czech language newspaper Slavie. Friend of Vojtech Naprstek. In 1877 he was elected to Wisconsin State Assembly. In 1882 he was elected to the Wisconsin State Senate. In 1886 he was appointed US Consul at Prague. In 1890 he was elected Lieutanant Governor of Wisconsin. In 1894 he was appointed US Consul at St Petersburg, Russian and in 1896 appointed US Consul at Crefeld, Germany.

    (Premonstratensian / Norbertine Abbey) In 1893, Father Bernard Pennings and two other Norbertines from Berne Abbey (in Heeswijk, Netherlands) came to the United States to minister to Belgian immigrants in northern Wisconsin. De Pere, Wisconsin, became the site of the first Norbertine Abbey in the new world.

    *** Jun 1894 - 1895, Smallpox Epidemic in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jan and Josefa VOPALENSKY family, living in Milwaukee travel back to Dusejov, Bohemia (Czech Republic). The Milwaukee smallpox epidemic of 1895-1895 reported 1074 total cases and 269 deaths. The highest concentration of cases and deaths was in the 11th Ward, which had 420 cases and 120 deaths. On 12th Avenue (the Jan Vopalensky family lived on 12th Avenue in the 11th ward) in the 11th Ward, there were 15 cases and 4 deaths.   • 1915: Eastland sinks in Chicago River
    24 Jul 1915, 844 died in the sinking of the Eastland excursion boat in the Chicago River. The ship rolled over while tied to the dock. It was chartered to take employees from Western Electric Company of Cicero, Illinois to a picnic in Michigan City, Indiana. Many of the passengers were Czech immigrants from Cicero; 220 of them perished.

    28 Oct 1918 - 31 Dec 1992, Establishment of independent Czechoslovakia in 1918. First President was Thomas G. Masaryk who died in 1937. According to the 1921 census, its population makup was: Czechs 51%, Slovaks 14.5%, Germans 23.4%, Hungarians 5.5%, plus some Polish, Ukrainians, Russians, Jews and Romy.
